strange, when i removed the other files, no crash at all.  The other files were all the default files though.  Is there some way it could be running into an error when trying to read from multiple files?

It shouldn't have a problem reading from multiple files.  Try adding them back in one-by-one until you get a crash.  Chances are, you'll find the file causing problems that way.
